Panel Session Title: Global Perspectives on Inclusive Science Communication

Panel Members: Sunshine Menezes, Luisa Massarani, Martin Storksdieck, Elizabeth Rasekoala and Ilka Parchmann

Session Description:

A growing number of researchers are interested or actively engaged in science communication and science engagement (collectively referred as Sci Comm) with public audiences. A central component of high quality Sci Comm is to foster or earn trust through authentic and equitable interactions with diverse publics. “Inclusive science communication” is a popular term for the effort to amplify the perspectives and priorities of groups that have been historically excluded from STEM, or whose perspectives have not been valued. Yet, inclusive science communication can have different meanings and applications in different contexts. This session will explore how inclusive science communication is applied across the globe and in different contexts. Speakers will describe their research to help attendees understand differences across cultural boundaries and how the common underlying principles can be applied in our research and science communication practice. The goal of the session is to highlight commonalities in Sci Comm across cultures and socio-political contexts, while also acknowledging important differences.
